Is the engagement ring also used as the wedding ring, or do I need two rings?

I give her an engagement ring, and then I think I have to give her a wedding band too.
but my question is, is the wedding band just a simple gold/silver/Platinum metal band, or is it basically another diamond ring? I spent the last 3 years of college saving up for this freaking ring (2 carats, flawless clarity, colorless, round brilliant).
I didn’t want to embarass myself and her giving her a crappy 1/4 carat ring with a ton of inclusions, so I invested a lot of money to get a nice ring, but I can’t afford a wedding band of the same quality.
