May 31st, 2010
huh asked:
What do you think is the best metal for a mens wedding ring/band? Gold, white or yellow, platinum, titanium or tungsten.
Also, i was wondering is a tungsten band just cheaper than all the rest of them? Because i rarely hear of it

Platinum is the best, hands down IMO….
I’ve never heard of tungsten before. Do they really DO that? But you can’t really go wrong with a silver or gold ring. It’s Classy and traditional.
a mixuter of white and yellow gold!
defanitley titanium. it doesnt pick up scratches and therefore always looks nice and neat.
I like the gold and platinum, but I’ve never heard of tungsten.
Good Luck!
White gold i’d say…
Platinum is the best looking, however a gold band that circles the left hand ring finder (that has a vein that connects directly to the heart) in spiritually the best option (gold promotes love, affection, loyalty) plus unlike platinum which is considered a “cold’ metal Godl is considered a warm metal and very auspicious for wedding bands, don’t forget to have your name or initials engraved on the inner part of the band, very auspicious too!
just a thought - but get something relatively softer metal like silver or gold. Men tend to get their hands into stuff and (strange as it seems) being able to quickly cut off a ring is a safety issue.
I know from experience when I broke my hand in baseball the ring finger swelled up a lot. The ring had to be cut off -
BTW, they can always be put back together ….
just an opinion
gudluk
Dont have experience with other metals but my husband and I both have platinum. It is a nice-looking metal as it is darker grey than, say, silver, but it is a soft metal and scratches easily. You cannot have it buffed more than once a year. This is the con of platinum. We are very happy with the look of the metal and so we overlook this con and still would not choose another metal if we had to do it again.
id say go with the color of your engagement ring.
but platinum is amazing but my dad has titanium and it looks great!
tungsten is rather pricey, unless you shop on ebay (like i am doing)
titanium is not as expensive as tungsten. and stainless is less than titanium, generally.
as for the golds… that’s a matter of personal preference as to which color you want.
tungsten and titanium are harder metals and not so prone to damage and losing shape.
i’m getting my fiance a tungsten band because he does security work and is a vol fire fighter- he needs something durable and sturdy. tungsten won’t scratch, dent, ding or lose shape!
As some of the other posters have said, be very careful about titanium wedding bands for men. It’s very easy to lose a finger if you’re in an accident. Most hospital and emergency rescue equipment cannot easily cut through titanium.
It depends on the color he wants.
Personally, I wouldn’t spend too much on a man’s wedding band. They tend to lose them. I know my parents have replaced my father’s wedding band at least three times. I’d say go with a simple, but classic yellow or white gold band.
Whatever matches yours is best. My to-be-in-laws have matching yellow gold rings with this cute, subtle squares pattern engraved in them. My man and I are getting plain white gold bands.
I got my fiance’ platinum. It is gorgeous and lasts a lot longer than other metals. I think it is called a “50 year metal” or something like that. It has a nice weight to it and looks classic. Good luck! Here’s a great website:
-Gold tends to be soft, weak, and easily scratched or worn, but it is easy to work with as a metal
-Platinum is a very rare metal, about 4 to 5 times as expensive as gold, but it is stronger and more durable than gold. It can sill be scratched and worn easily though.
-Titanium is hard and strong, resist wear, stays polished much longer than gold, but the design options are a little limited because it’s rather hard to work with.
“Tungsten” can refer to two different materials.
-Pure tungsten metal (which is used to make lightbulb filaments, doesn’t melt even when it’s white hot…) This metal has similar properties as titanium, they are both hard and strong, but difficult to work with.
-”Tungsten Carbide” which is an extremely hard but brittle *mineral*, not a metal. It can only be scratched or worn by diamonds or sapphires. Tungsten carbide is also used to make drill bits and other machine tools, because of is extremely high wear resistance. Tungsten carbide rings will keep their mirror finish for many years, but they can possibly break or shatter if dropped onto a hard surface.
Titanium, tungsten metal, and tungsten carbide cannot be stretched or shrunk if your finger changes size. You have to get a new one if the ring stops fitting. (Many jewelers are willing to simply exchange it for a different size, they’ll re-polish and resell the old ring….)
I can’t tell you what is “best,” that depends on your own personal taste….
As other posters have mentioned, if you injure your finger and it swells up, titanium, tungsten, and tungsten carbide are difficult or impossible to cut off…….could be a bad thing…….
Hope that makes sense,

tungsten is really heavy. it’s relatively new to the jewelry business i think. it is supposed to be a heavy duty metal (the jewelry told me they use it in airplane engines or something)
a lot of guys like it because its darker. my guy tried it on and said its too heavy
personally, i like white gold.
Go with gold - white or yellow. His ring should match your ring of course, so both of you have to agree on this issue.
But most importantly, Think of your wedding rings as your love for each other and not as a piece of jewelry you wear. Being a hopeless romantic, think of circle of your ring being like your love; and endless circle. Perfectly complete and never ending and no breaks in-between.
IMO.

We are getting rings made out of palladium. Its from the same atomic family as platinum but is no way near as expensive. The main difference is that palladium is lighter than platinum.
For a manly man, 10k yellow gold is the best. It puts up with a lot of wear, and is strong.
I like some of them which are two-tone -
