Diamond Ring Clarity?

July 18th, 2009
Nate asked:

I wanted to buy my girlfriend a promise ring. I am looking to spend around $200 (poor college student) and I found one with an excellent cut and good color. However, the clairty is only an I1. It is only a .05 ct diamond, so I was wondering if you could see any imperfections.

I think you could get that for about $100 all day long.

Follow-up post: To whoever gave me the thumbs-down; explain why. What’s the difference in everyone saying I1 @ .05 cwt is a poor quality or small diamond, and my saying you can get the same ring for $100? I know the value of rings, and whoever is wanting $200 for that one is charging mall retail prices.

About like saying, “I want to pay sticker price for a car.”

And Nate, good luck, man. I agree with some of the other posts, a solitaire is considered more of an engagement ring than a promise ring. And save for the good stuff. :-)

I just want to throw this out there…if you are spending about $200…why go for the solitaire diamond? Save that for the real engagement. What about a right hand ring (check overstock.com for deals)? Or Even Tiffany’s has sterling silver rings for 200 and less. Tiffany’s makes a great statement as well :) This way the ring you buy her can be continued to be worn throughout your life together even after wedding jewelry has replaced it. Just a thought. You know your girlfriend so I am sure you will do the right thing :)
    Best wishes!

    I1 is VERY bad clarity

here is a page that will educate you on all diamonds

by the way i like the poster above. he has a great idea with the tiffany ring… if you tell her your saving the diamond for the engagement and present her with a tiffany ring, i think she’ll understand :) here are some in your price range. good luck!

Save your money for an engagement ring later on. Sorry, but I think the concept of a promise ring is completely stupid.

No. I bought my wife a 3.85 carat and opted for a little less on color and clarity. I could only see the difference under a loop in strong light so why bother? Saved me thousands on the difference. And this answer only cost you 10 points! (smile)

I think you should avoid a diamond solitaire for a promise ring- that seems too similar to an actual engagement ring.
For $200, I’m sure you could find a lovely silver band with her birthstone, or another stone she really likes.

That is a poor quality and is a small carat. I would personal save the diamonds for the engagement. Before he proposed to me, my fiance went and bought me a claddagh from a local Irish gift shop. Its the ring that have the two hands holding a heart with a crown on top. They have the quality of love (the heart), friendship (the hands) and loyalty (the crown). I can honestly say it was one of the sweetest gifts I’ve ever received. It is white gold but still only cost $125 so within your price range.
