Sudden allergy to wedding ring?

June 8th, 2009
It’s Me asked:

I’ve noticed lately that I occasionally develop a rash under my wedding ring. The strange part is, it’s only on half my finger, not all the way around (it’s only on the side closest to my pinky). It starts getting itchy and small blisters form, so I’ll take it off for a few days until it clears. A few weeks go by, and it will happen again.

It’s not soap/lotion/anything getting trapped under there and not rinsed. I take off my ring when I wash my hands and when I use lotion. I’ve always just used neosporin and covered it with a band-aid when this happens.

Any idea what could be causing this, and why it’s only on one side of my finger and not all the way around?

I have the same exact thing, and have had it for several years now. Mine seems to get worse when I have had my hands in water a lot. One thing that does help is Aquafor ointment. If I apply it overnight, by morning it is usually quite cleared up. I believe it is some form of allergic dermatitis. Good luck!

that happened to me. i think that mine is being caused by the fact that my ring is starting to get too tight because i’ve gained a little weight since i’ve gotten married. i’ve been married about three years, and i’ve gained one clothing size.

i just quit wearing mine because i have yet to try to get it sized.

The same thing happened to me! My Dr. told me it was eczema…and I used Cortisone cream. The problem - allergic reaction to the yellow gold. I have since discovered I am not allergic to white gold, or sterling silver. Here is a good trick I learned, so that I am able to wear my original wedding ring..try this! Use clear nail polish, and apply a thin coat on the inside of your ring. It worked for me. You will have to re-apply it about every six months. It solved my problem, never had the rash again from my ring. A lady at a jewelry store suggested it. Good Luck!!!

Find out what your band is made of, and take it to the jeweler…see if they can put the gem on a different band. Do you want to buy cream for the rest of your life?
