I would like to have a engagement ring with a mystic fire store instead of a diamond?

I like diamonds but almost every woman has one and therefore I feel they’re overated. I would much rather have a mystic fire topaz gem for many different reasons (for one I’m not a materialistic person and would much rather have something of sentimental value no matter what it costs and I’d like to have something “different” from the every day norm engagement ring), but my boyfriend says an engagment ring should be diamond.

I don’t think it should matter what stone it is, or if it’s an heirloom or purchased from a jewler, or if it’s $100 or $3,000, as long as the feelings represented by it are real and true.

Should I just relax and be thankful I have a man that is willing to discuss rings and marriage, or is this a point worth making?
I have told him why I would prefer not to have a diamond.
Here’s the thing you guys aren’t understanding I DON’T WANT A DIAMOND.

If anything I’d like to have a M.F.Topaz and if anything diamond accents. And I don’t care about the popularity of MFT, and I don’t care if it “clashes” with outfits or not. I like it and I think it’s very pretty.

Have you told him WHY you would rather not have a diamond? I mean, he’s buying it, but you’re the one that has to wear it, so if you don’t want a diamond he should respect that.

Forever you would be telling people this was your engagment ring. Diamonds are what symbolizes its an engament ring not just a ring. I recommond going to a smaller jewlery shop not a local mall for your ring. That way its something totally different not typical. That is what my husband did, and he even designed the ring himself. Many good jewlers will do this. I can not tell you how many people comment on my ring. Perfect strangers tell me how nice it is and different. It also helps to get a good quality and cut of a diamond. Everyone thinks my center stone is well over a carret but its not its just under a carret, but the cut and quality just make it look a lot bigger!

I agree with Dradle. You can have something different and still have a diamond. Although the mystic topaz is very popular right now it may not always be. I went to a smaller jeweler and found a great diamond and sapphire ring (although it’s not a wedding ring) no one else has one like it. One other thing to consider is that diamonds pretty much go with everything whereas a mystic topaz might clash with some outfits. Get a mystic topaz for your right ring finger.

I think you should have whatever you want. If a topaz has sentimental meaning for you, that’s far more important than a diamond. Giving diamonds is a tradition someone else started; it’s not your tradition. Too many people follow the herd and do what they think everyone else wants them to do. Good for you for wanting to do your own thing. What I think is classy and beautiful is a woman with a wedding band and no engagement band at all, so you could consider that, and wear the topaz separately.
