Usually, when someone wears only a solitaire, it means that they are engaged to be married. The wedding band signifies that they are married. My wedding band is 12 millimeters wide with a solitaire mounted in the center. I wore the solitaire in an engagement ring until I got married, then I remounted it onto the band–so, in my case, it has served two purposes.

So, in your case, no–a solitaire can’t be used as a wedding ring. Either get a new band now, or don’t wear your solitaire until you do. You can wear your solitaire on a chain inside your clothing if you want to keep it near you.

Absolutely, yes a solitaire can be worn as a wedding ring! Many couples choose to forgo the whole engagement ring aspect, and after the wedding she wears the ring of her choice. It’s unusual, but so what? You could wear a twist tie as a wedding ring - what matters is the ring’s importance and symbolism to you and him, not how many rings society thinks you should wear on one finger.
It’s no different then the previous poster switching her diamond out to a different band afterwards - she is also still only wearing one ring, not two… so it doesn’t make her ring any less her “wedding ring” then yours would be.
