Is it true that diamonds less than 1 carat doesn’t come with certificates?

diamond wedding rings
Meow asked:

I just bought a man’s diamond wedding ring at Kevin’s Jeweler in the mall (A decent jewelry branch in California). The sales told me that it’s a 1/3 carat weight natural diamond, D class, probably between VS1-SI2 clarity with fair cut. When I asked for the certificate, they told me that they don’t issue one for diamonds that are small. They only offer 2-years warranty. Is it true that diamonds that are small doesn’t come with a certificate? Or is this a scam?

For a diamond of that size, a certificate is probably overkill. You should, however, receive an appraisal for any jewelry purchase that is worth over $500.00 (not what you paid for it but the insurance replacement value which is usually more than the purchase price) so that you can add the piece to your insurance policy. Any diamond can be certified by sending it to one of the certification labs but as it is not cheap many diamonds remain uncertified - check with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) for further information about certification procedures. My one carat diamond that I inheireted is not certified but it has been appraised just in case it’s lost or stolen.

No diamond of any size has to come with a certificate of any kind. It is a mark of the stone’s quality if it does, but there is no law or rule that would make it a “scam” if there is no certificate. Most stores do not issue them for smaller stones like that.

Certification only means that someone took the time to look at it and offically appraise it. If you really wanted to, you could get it certified, but for that weight it really isn’t necessary.

Most diamonds under 1 carat come with a certificate only if they are certified by GIA or AGS. Mine is less than a carat and it came with a certificate.
