Sell it on Ebay. You may not get full price for the gown but you should get a good price for the ring, if it can be authenticated.
If you take it to a jewelry store or a pawn shop you will get raped. Sell the ring privately. Hopefully you have an appraisal; if not, invest the $75 in getting one. Then take out an ad in the classifieds. Most newspapers have “mailboxes” so that people will just leave their information and you can call them, that way they do not have your name, address, or real phone number (SAFETY first!). Another way would be to try a reputable auction house and set a minimum bid on the piece, but this will also end up netting you less cash (after the auctioneer’s take and the unpredictable pricing).
Selling the ring on ebay will be a risky proposition. If you do it this way be sure of a couple of things. First, make certain that the money clears all banks before mailing out the ring. Second, be sure to be as accurate and descriptive as possible. There are a million pieces of diamond jewelry for sale on ebay… it isn’t hte best place to go for exposure and money.
