Anyone have a moissanite ring? Can people tell the difference between that and a diamond?

Goldie asked:

I am considering moissanite for an engagement ring..We are trying to save $ for a house and wedding and cannot afford the diamond ring I want. I would rather moissanite than a tiny diamond. I also feel better knowing its not a conflict diamond.

Nobody but an expert jeweler can tell the difference. They’re the closest thing to a diamond.

A moissanite ring is 2.5 times as sparkly as a real diamond and can look like a disco-ball under certain light- in other words, very fake. It is impossible to get a pure white one- they will be either greenish or grey. The better alternative is glass, which has properties more similar to diamonds than moissanite. They are cheaper, too.

*edit- No I wasn’t talking about CZ and I actually forgot to quote my source. Eek!

I have several pieces of moissanite. No, you can’t tell the difference. I think the other poster is thinking of CZ. Moissanite looks exactly alike and if it won’t bother you, go for it. The only thing to remember is that of course moissanite is not as strong as a diamond. So over the course of years, it is more likely to chip than a diamond is. However being man made, you never have to deal with the color variations. All moissanites are clear and look great–no yellow.

As long as it won’t bother you that it isn’t a real diamond, go for it. Just whenever you get it cleaned or resized, let them know. Many of these places scan it to verify that it is real–so go ahead and tell them that you know it’s moissanite so the place won’t stress about telling you. (I just got mine resized and the lady was telling me how she had just had to tell a bride it was fake and the bride flipped out)

I have a diamond simulant, I don’t think it is moissanite. My fiance paid $600 for a ring that would have been $4500 with a natural diamond. I’m into saving the cash for a house, not a rock. Nobody can tell and I feel much better knowing that he didn’t spend all that cash on a ring.

I just got a moissanite engagement ring. I’m an engineer and did the comparison and just couldn’t justify spending all that on a diamond. I think it’s a superior product for the money. Especially since it’s impossible to sell a diamond for anything and you have to worry about insurance, theft, falling out of the setting etc. We spent the money instead on a lovely setting designed by a local artist with a lot of platinum and sapphires. It’s lovely and nobody had to die digging it out of the ground for me.

We just bought a house and enjoy that far more. If you are concerned you always have the option of replacing the stone at a later date.

I have one and I love it! I also can’t stand the diamond industry…horrible practices throughout. I got my 3-stone ring at Penney’s and found a curved Moissanite band, at Amazon.com of all places, that fits with it perfectly. Moissanites were originally discovered in the meteor craters in Northern Arizona (I happen to live there), and have recently been recreated in a lab environment. They are almost as hard as diamonds (94 vs. 97 on the hardness scale), and they are much more refractive (sparklier). My ring was about $1200 and the band was $400. I absolutely love mine, and people comment on it all the time, even guys!

I can tell easily. but most people cannot. a jeweler can tell almost immediately under the loupe. moissanite does something called doubling under a loupe. i never advocate purchasing a simulate over a diamond, diamonds are expensive for a reason. oh and very few diamonds are actually conflict diamonds, there are strict rules about it now. i really suggest the small diamond, after a few years it will be more special for him to come home on your anniversary with the real big diamond.
