I inherited a diamond ring from my mother, it was her wedding set. She told me that it is close to being perfect, with only one white carbon spot. The question I have is how do I find out if this correct? And how do I get something to prove that it is?

If you are concerned about using a local jeweler for an appraisal, then the route to go would be to avail yourself of the appraisal services offered by the non-profit Gemological Institute of America.
Most fine jewelers and auction houses rely on the GIA grading reports for fine diamonds and gemstones. While it works extensively with the jewelry trade, it also offers their appraisal/grading services to the general public for minimal or no cost.
