Can you rub out a scratch on the front of a stainless steel appliance?

Mimi asked:
I believe my housekeeper scratched the door of my stainless steel refrigerator with her diamond wedding ring when she was vigorously wiping it down. Can a scratch be rubbed out, or treated in some way on stainless steel so that it no longer shows or is minimized?
Thanks, Fish. Your answer is great. I will leave the question open for a while, but yours is a very good answer and I will be checking for the repair stuff at an appliance shop tomorrow.

Usually if the scratch isn’t very deep it is easily buffed out using a stainless repair kit. They are in most appiance part and some dealer stores. The kit generally tells the approximate amount of damage it can repair. If it is too deep or unrepairable, check the price listing of a new door if you want to change it. Compare the price listing of the part compared to the cost of the fridge, if it’s a relatively cheap fridge it’s usually not recommended that you waste money on such a part because some stainless is expensive. Don’t call for a service tech to change the door for you unless it is a very high end fridge or under warranty. In most cases a fridge door is easily interchangable.
