its just a fashion thing. The wedding ring began in Europe(Italy), and we adapted that custom. The Italians wanted a way to make sure that everyone knew which girl was taken or not, very jealous people (I’m one of them)

A lot of other countries wear their rings on the right hand. What the reasoning is behind it, I don’t know.
And some countries use the wedding band for the engagement ring as well. I’m assuming that this is because once you are betrothed, you’re off the market.
Usually the wedding ring is worn with the engagement ring on top, but others wear it just the opposite. It’s really a matter of preference.

It can be rather confusing at times.

It is dependent upon which country. My husband is from Eastern Europe and they wear their wedding rings on the right hand. He asked that I, too, do this - and I have done so. Interestingly, my mom and dad were from a similar ethnic tradition, and when they were married here, in the mid-1940s, the rings were placed on their right hands. My mom said she moved hers to the left and always wore it there because “everyone else” did.
I like having mine on the right, because it is different, and I wear my anniversary ring (10th) first, because it’s a chevron design, then the wedding ring, then the engagement ring on top. I am around a lot of couples from my husband’s country, and they all wear their wedding rings on the right hand.
Just as you saw European women wear dress diamond rings on their left hand, — in North America, women would wear dress rings on their right hand.
